Customer: Municipality of Koper
Location: Koper, Slovenia
Project: conceptual design and studies, 2015

After the cancellation of the parking lot in front of the Škocjan cemetery there remained a large paved area where people now gather for funeral ceremonies. During the warmer months, this area is unsuitable for prolonged detained due to sun scorch, so it urgently needed shading. As shading with plants is the most effective natural way, we decided for pergola design, as the typical spatial element in Istria. Steel pipes construction of pergolas is trying to approach the organic structure of the leaf, which gives a sufficient static strength against wind and weight. The construction is supported with five steel pillars. At the foot of each pillar creepers are planted to overgrown the structure and create a welcoming atmosphere. In this way the front area acquires the character of a public space where people can meet on a daily basis not only for mourning purposes.
